- Henry was a fishmonger like his father. He is listed on the 1851 Census as George H Booker with ‘Church St.Marylebone’ as his place of birth. Though this differs from the details he gave on Census returns when an adult from 1871 onwards, there is almost no doubt that this is the same person, born to George and Elizabeth in about 1835. What's more, he appears to have had a twin sister, Charlotte.
Henry married in 1858 from an address in Albany Street, St Pancras, which runs down the eastern boundary of Regent's Park. He has not yet been found on the 1861 Census.
The 1871 Census shows Henry and his wife Mary Ann, both aged 36, living at 74 Chalk Farm Road, Kentish Town, London, just north of Regent's Park. They already had 5 children. The eldest boy (11), born in about 1860, was Henry Edward. Then came George W (9), Arthur A and Charlotte Rose (both 8) and Mary Edith (6). The household also included a 33 year old female boarder, a widow and dressmaker, whose name is listed as C Perce Booker. She and the lady of the house, Mary Ann, gave their place of birth as Bognor, Sussex. Bersted, their known birthplace, is close to Bognor Regis.
By the time of the 1881 Census, Henry was giving his occupation as fishmonger and poulterer and his 19-year-old cousin, Charles A Booker, born in Bloomsbury, was working in his shop as a ‘servant’. The family were still living at 74 Chalk Farm Road and two more children, Alice and Herbert, were listed. The household also included Henry's widowed sister-in-law, Charlotte Perry (43) and a servant, Emily Miles (14), from Newport Pagnell. Some of this information is confirmed by his daughter Alice's birth certificate. Henry's wife, Mary Ann, gave her place of birth as Bersted rather than Bognor on this occasion.
A Henry George Booker died in St Pancras, London in December 1881 aged 47 (England and Wales, Civil Registration Index: 1837-1983). There is no proof that this is the same man but the dates of birth and death and the location all fit and he does not appear in the Census records for 1891 or 1901.
